Unlike most of Croatia’s coastal cities, Šibenik has no Roman heritage, built as it was 1,000 years ago during the reign of the Croatian kings. This Croat ancestry gives it a unique feel, with winding, narrow streets and small buildings instead of wide Roman thoroughfares and spacious houses. The best way into the old core is through the public gardens on the east of the old town, with their trickling fountains. The garden benches are a good place to sit and read up on the city before you delve in.
